The Spring 2022 issue of GOLDENSEAL magazine is dedicated to Pocahontas County, celebrating our BICENTENNIAL! Our friend, Jennifer Mihal, contributed a great article on the history of SHARP’S COUNTRY STORE with pictures!

The kids from the Hacker Valley School, located in Webster County, seemed to enjoy looking at the old bottles, the free museum and the little 1941 American Bantam car parked out in front of the store.

Next, across the street to Sharp's Kissing Bridge where they posed for this picture. A great group of very well behaved school children!

Our ESSO sign is back up after 50+ years! It was hit by the boom of a lumber truck in the 1960s. I found it 12 years ago in our old Cellar House. I drug it out, cleaned it up and hung it for a display in our store. A few months ago, we found a pole identical to the old one and the process began to restore and replace. SUCCESS! Just this week the pole was mounted on a new cement slab complete with electric wiring for the lights. Thanks to Leonard from Seneca Rocks and Gene from Slatyfork for helping with the project! The BENTLEY DRIVERS CLUB took a tour of Sharp's Country Store on May 13, 2017. Leader, Richard Farr (standing) and riding companion are pictured as they posed in front of the store. Other Bentley owners from around the world, England to Australia, stopped by as they tour the United States. We had great fun trading stories. Thanks for coming and safe travels!

The Sharp Family of Slatyfork is featured in the JULY 2013 issue of WONDERFUL WEST VIRGINIA Magazine! Visit Sharp's Country Store and take a tour of the log home behind the store. It is the subject of the recently discovered Civil War history featured in the article.

My name is Tom Shipley, and L. D. Sharp was my great grandfather. He started the store in 1884. Today, I own and operate Sharp’s Country Store for my generation.

Welcome to the Sharp Farm!

Rachel Dilley Sharp was my great, great, great grandmother. She and her husband, William Sharp, III, built the log home behind the store in 1841. Rachel made a coverlet for each of her children in the ‘attic’ of that log cabin. This coverlet was discovered by my mother, Ramona Sharp Shipley, and was donated to our museum. The coverlet is featured in a book by Fawn Valentine, "WEST VIRGINIA QUILTS AND QUILTMAKERS".

Whether Harley, Honda or Hog....the Sharp family LOVES motorcycles and the riders that arrive on them! Picture to the right is my great uncle, Paul Sharp, on a YALE motorcycle.
